On the 26th and 27th of the month, Apple’s internet traffic was attempted to be seized by the Russian telecom firm Rostelecom. It is unknown whether the company did this on purpose or due to technical glitches. However, according to some available data, it is highly probable that this was done on purpose.
Rostelecom tried to divert Apple’s internet traffic for 12 hours
For over 12 hours, Rostelecom periodically tried to interfere with Apple’s internet traffic on the 26th and 27th of the month. This intervention, which is regularly tried, was made despite Apple’s obstacles. The Russian telecom giant Rostelecom tried to direct Apple users over its servers instead of Apple’s servers. According to MANRS, an organization that works “to reduce the most common routing threats,” Russia did this on purpose.
Any user cannot choose their server in general. Service providers undertake this service. The request from the user’s device is met by the server that will meet the demand, and a response is returned to the user.
Telecommunication companies such as Rostelecom provide this traffic, but data security is not entirely theirs. For example, they are responsible for providing the traffic of a message sent over WhatsApp, but they cannot access the message content; it is organized by Meta, the umbrella organization of WhatsApp. According to MANRS, Apple should take responsibility for this attack since the attack was directly managed by the telecommunications company that has a role in internet traffic.
Apple users did not experience service interruptions
Under the 12-hour internet traffic attack, Apple services were not disrupted, and no users were affected. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the war continues in the cyber field. This process, where many companies have suspended their services in Russia, is not exactly like this on Apple’s side. Do you think Apple will enlighten this issue and ask for an explanation from Russia?
